I've tried to install the current stable version on windows
(2.2.7), and it's not that bad. The game starts with the locale of the
OS.
The problem is that you must *manually select* the locales on the
installation. If you don't do that, which is the default option, the
game will start in English.
Apparently not. I chose German and Gaelic when I installed it but I'm
not offered a choice of playing in German or English, it just defaults
to English.
I think that selecting all the locales in the install it's the
best we can do to make the game playable for everyone who does not
speak English.
I think there's more than one option but then I don't know the gubbins
of Freeciv
1) Select language before downloading the install file, the game will
install in that language only
2) Offer a default language choice during install
3) Offer a language choice upon starting game
Any of those would work from an end user point of view. I cannot think
of many people who will want to run more than one language on their
system but that scenario might be worth bearing in mind.
OTOH, the problem with the Gaelic locale is that gtk and gnome are
not localized in Gaelic, so you'll never have the common dialogs on
Gaelic.
I don't know how those files are bundled into the locale specific files.
What would happen if I opened the relevant gtk20.mo file and translated
just that half a dozen strings? Could that be bundled with the gd locale
files?
I do a lot of localisation in Gaelic but with so few of us (mostly me),
I must focus on what's going to have the biggest uptake and gtk doesn't
fit that bill (at the moment).
