Hi Florian,

No it is not. FreeDOS is one of very few ways to run
CLASSIC software which no longer runs properly in DOS
windows of Windows and which is too complex for for
example dosbox. So it is good to have DOS to be able
to run old software. On the other hand, you are right,
people have to be aware that DOS is also a very nice
lightweight system for doing MODERN things as well.

Your use examples: File managing - well I prefer Unix
filesystems, so... Audio player: Yes cool for a party
night but most of the time I want to surf and email
simultaneously ;-). Developing / editing: it can be
nice to have a full screen text editor as the only
thing on your screen (our EDIT supports having multiple
text windows open simultaneously :-)), less distraction
compared to Windows / Linux where people often have
many things open... WWW, email: as said, I prefer to
do online things in an OS where I can do other things
like music playing and text editing and running DOS
simultaneously.

Then we should link to the post 1.0 todo / wishlist Wiki page.

I want 1.1 with updates, bugfixes, better docs and usability.

For me, having drivers for some more modern hardware, like
a virtual SB16 to real AC97 audio bridge (use jemm386 and
mpxplay for inspiration) and better USB / PCMCIA / SATA /
UDMA drivers. In the long run also adding FreeBASIC and
ClamAV CLAMSCAN and a dosfsck based SCANDISK of good quality
and with good QBASIC compatibility. BASIC is no really cool
language and many people will recommend REXX, BASH or PERL
for modern DOS users, but there are many old Basic source
code files which people want to keep using. There should
also be a good mix of power features and reasonably easy
use and good documentation. No need to transmogrify your
Vista or Linux boot menu by magically touching NTFS or
Reiser or whatever partitions. Also, NTFSresize is best
done with Linux. But then, why don't we add one of those
nice "toolbox Linux" distros to our own fdfullcd.iso for
that?

Another thing which should be better than in 1.0 is to
have an easy way to do an install which from some point
on asks almost no questions and which does NOT use
internet nor USB during the "unzip" part of the install.
Would make installing fast and more "foolproof". You can
always add drivers later if you are a poweruser, and if
you only want to replace your old MS DOS 6, you will not
need to download, say, ASPI drivers anyway, because you
will already have them and will know how to use them.

I seem to remember thatDefrag is totally slow for fat32 but
that it does have fat32 support now. Next would be undelete,
if anybody wants to add fat32 support there, I would be happy
to explain which parts of the code have to be changed how.

Agreed on the sound drivers, but not on the filesystems.
DOS is DOS and is meant to be DOS. You will not want to
have a multiuser DOS with access control lists in the
filesystem and everything. Making MPLAYER run better in
HXRT is certainly interesting but luckily already ongoing.
There already is the Arachne browser and viewers like LXPIC.

For the task manager, I think it is a lot better and a lot
easier to just run several DOSEMU windows simultaneously.
Resizeable and everything :-).
