Agreed here. "I'm Spartacus" works only when the real message is,
"None of us are actually Spartacus, and it's absurd for you to
persecute any of us." In our case, everyone really *IS* Spartacus, and
the Man will be quite happy to screw over as many of us as he can.
In addition, we don't have anywhere near the critical mass to pull off
this kind of mass movement. I would guesstimate that we have a maximum
of 500-1000 regular Freenet users, and that's probably pretty
optimistic. I have no idea if we can up that by a couple of orders of
magnitude before MediaEnforcer or a similar attack starts taking out
ISP accounts, but that's what we're going to need in order to stay
afloat under that kind of attack.
Let me also point out that "I'm Spartacus" did -not- work in the DeCSS
case. Hundreds and maybe thousands of people mirrored DeCSS, and
hundreds of people got network disconnections and/or lawsuits that
shut them down. Everyone else backed off when they realized how
dangerous it was. A year or so later, the folks in the lawsuits have
lost, and it's practically impossible to find DeCSS on the
Web. (Freenet, of course, is a different story B-).)
"They" are perfectly happy to throw tons of money out there to fuck
us. Experience seems to show that "they" can take us out if we do this
stuff above ground. It's sad, but I can't help feeling that it's true.
Counter-examples are definitely welcome.
