I am doing something similar.

I have two TiVo's that I use for encoding, these go in the closet.  The nice
thing about the TiVo is that it only draws about 20 watts each.  Any garden
variety PC (capable of encoding) draws easily about 90 watts.  

I then use front ends on each of my TVs (currently a mix of ITX and PCs) for
streaming.  My hope is to go all ITX front ends, once they are capable of
DVD decode (20 watts and capable of streaming from either TiVos or servers).

BTW - MythTV currently supports the concept of front ends (players) and 
back ends (encoders).
