I'm thinking on buying a hardware dvd decoder card anyway, such as the Hollywood+ range of cards.
I don't know what the legal status of that is, but even if I did have a software decoder too, I would have to assume that I had some defacto rights to decode DVD's in linux. I think if someone took the time to ask a lawyer about these things, the situation would become much clearer for everyone. But perhaps harware DVD decoding is another way to go?
