Cool -- I'll clean this up a little more over Christmas and ensure it gets
commited to CVS in time for the 2.6.4 release.
I'm able to shave a few more milliseconds off other calculations as well,
which I'll fold in to the patch you tested; I'll likely send out another
patch for review/testing in due course on this.
