        Maybe Olivier has a Matrox card, which supports two visuals
simultaneously (24+8 overlay mode)?  But the RENDER extension, which
steals most of the colormap cells in 4.2, isn't loaded in overlay mode.

        Olivier, which hardware do you use?  AFAIR, there was some
graphics hardware from either DEC, SGI or HP, which allowed to use several
hardware colormaps in 8-bit mode (in fact that was a kind of overlay), but
I didn't know that PCs also support this feature, so I'm very curious.
