I trust you, I just never heard of an X Server that supported 8 bit that way. I've done some Google searches and I still don't know whats going on. Is there some clue in the output from xdpyinfo? Does you card allow multiple colormaps to be used at once? Since you seem to have some new kind of 8 bit X Server, I think your changes are good if you can find a way to turn them on for this new X Server.
