some of what I know . . . The Lucent/Orinoco/Wavelan/Aveya/etc. series of cards will work in any 'Book with a PC Card slot, including my 540c with PCcardcage. Drivers for any of these cards can be at the orinoco ftp server: <ftp://ftp.orinocowireless.com/pub/software/ORiNOCO/PC_Card/MacOS/> <ftp://ftp.orinocowireless.com/pub/software/IEEE/PC_CARD/APPLE/> Or here: <http://workingwireless.net/wireless/Installers/> or here for opensource OS X drivers: <http://wirelessdriver.sourceforge.net>
Apple's Airport software works only with PCI-based 'Books. More specifically, Airport requires open firmware, which amounts to the same thing. BTW Newtons 2000/2100/iMate can use a Orinoco/Wavelan/Aveya/etc. wireless cards. Driver can be found . . . ahh, I'm too lazy to look that one up. Of course, all this piques my interest . . . so off I go in search of . . . *** Hmm, does this suspiciously :-) look like an Airport card or what?!? <http://www.agere.com/client/images/pccard_in.jpg> found 2/3 the way down this page: <http://www.agere.com/client/wlan.html> What 'puter makers used these babies I wonder? Well I mean besides Apple? :-) Would this item be functionally the same as an Airport card? Enquiring mind wants to know! The Airport card is allegedly _not_ compatible with a regular PC Card slot. DoYaThink I'd damage my Airport card if I tried it in the PC card slot? Damn, I have only one AP card and I'd hate to fry the stinkin' thing just for the fun of finding out! Will a Lucent/Orinoco/Wavelan/Aveya/etc. card work in an Airport slot? I guess I'll have to try stuffing one into my Pismo's slot to find out for myself. IIRC I'm pretty sure a Lucent/Orinoco/Wavelan/Aveya/etc. card works in an Airport slot on Apple desktop machines.
