I had an interesting drive failure recently. It was a Quantum Fireball 10gb
that I got 2nd had as a pull from an iMac. I had been using it in a Umax
C600 for several months and the other day it just quit. It wouldn't spin up
although the green light did come on. Looking at the circuit board side of
the drive, there are some rectangular chips with a row of many connectors on
each side. On one of these chips there is a spot that appears burnt, and
about 3 or 4 of the connectors that also appear burnt.
Has anyone seen a similar failure? I'm hoping it doesn't imply anything
about the computer being at fault. Is it possible to just replace the
circuit board on a dead drive? If I took the drive apart would the insides
make good Xmas tree decorations?
