You could do that, but I would avoid it. Not that it won't work, but 
USB has a very slow transfer rate of 1.5 MB per second. FireWire can do 
up to 50 MB per second. Actual rates will be slower, but FireWire will 
still be far better.

As a comparison, ethernet will go 1.25 MB per second for 10 base T and 
12.5 MB per second for 10/100 (the type on most Macs since about three 
years ago). There is gigabit ethernet, but that's only on a few Macs 
(PowerMacs from July 2000 or later and PowerBooks from late 2001 or 
later), and you can only benefit if both the computers have it.

Actually, the easiest way would probably be to use an external FireWire 
hard drive, but if you don't have one it's probably not worth getting 
one solely for this purpose.
