thanks, but unfortunately it's a bit far from wyoming where i live. i do on the other hand plan to attend some of the cu boulder auctions when i have money, i've already missed some goodies there!
the smaller government auctions are also good, but not the huge ones that draw a bunch of idiots who outbid each other and make everything too expensive, just like on ebay some people will drive prices of used stuff up higher than new prices or at least too high to be a bargain or even reasonable. when i worked for the forest service i knew when our branch had auctions, got some real steals, bid a penny on nearly anything useful and often got things for 5 or 10 cents, which is good because the way the paranoia works (not wanting the people running the auction to ignore bids and steal the stuff) anything that isn't awarded gets hit with a hammer and tossed in the dumpster! some how i don't see how that protects them, people in the property office could always just put in their cheap bid and throw out hight bids if they wanted to steal stuff (well, they'd have to use a friends name, but still). it's typical of our government though, smash it with a hammer before throwing it in the trash so no one can have it for free. without guys like me that happens to a lot of stuff at small government auctions. hell, i got one piece of electronics for $2, got hard up for money and sold it to a used equipment store for $600, and they calibrated it and resold it for $1800! i have a few valuable pieces of equipment that were almost free, and i got a lot of junk i took apart for parts etc. if not for me, that $1800 piece of test gear would have been hit with a hammer and tossed in the dumpster, they wouldn't have even asked the college or local schools if they wanted it, and it was a reasonably popular piece of test gear (krohn height (sp?) 3322r dual filter, very nifty). the government didn't invent waste, but they are the major supplier.
