Okay, I ordered some new RAM from OWC--six 256M sticks, because I need three for my B&W G3 (for a total of four, including one 256M I already have) and my parents wanted three to max out the memory on their PC, which also uses the same kind.
I prepared to test the memory using the sandwich method described on this list by Jeff Walther, using the 64M Samsung and 256M Kingston DIMMs that were in the G3 when I bought it. These were in slots A & D (the first and last slots). I had previously run the memory test on the Samsung and Kingston DIMMS overnight, and they passed over 5400 passes. I know that some of the memory is taken up in order to process the test, so I can't consider them absolutely good, but I figured I could work, for the moment, from that assumption. After the first two OWC DIMMs failed in slot B on their very first pass, I tried one of them in slot C, and it again failed on the first pass. So I wondered about whether both of those slots were bad. After all, when I got the computer, the Samsung and Kingston DIMMs were in slots A & D, respectively, and that's where they were when I'd used the computer successfully and where I'd done that long run with no failures. So I removed the OWC memory, left the Samsung in slot A and moved the Kingston to slot B. I successfully ran over 300 tests. Too impatient to wait for thousands of passes, I moved on, this time leaving Kingston in slot B and moving Samsung to slot C. Again, I was able to run over 300 passes without a failure. So can I reasonably assume those sockets are probably okay? So maybe this was one of those batches Jeff mentioned, with a high percentage of bad DIMMs? I'm now testing the rest, but it doesn't look good, as numbers 3 and 4 have now failed. OWC guarantees their memory, but it's a hassle, and I worry that I've somehow got the wrong flavor of memory and getting more of the same kind won't help.
