Bruce,

There was never an official "plausible denial" for the
parallel development of OSX for the Intel platform,
and the 'rumor' surfaced as early as 2002 if I'm not
mistaken.

The "cell chip" argument with IBM/Sony was a plausible
excuse to execute the option to abandon PowerPC.

I suspect Apple's long term strategy is to withdraw
into a proprietary shell and compete on "eye candy"
alone. Plus, IBM's wholescale embrace of Linux does
not match Apple's "make 'em pay" approach.

So it comes down to slightly tweaked (as in "add a
chip to prevent using any other OS") but essentially
dirt cheap hardware with eye candy OS and
"easy-to-use" apps versus Linux (across the board
compatibility) and a longer learning curve but free
and easier to find free support.

Skeptics? Remember the windows SW-based 56k modem on
the earlier iBooks? I don't recall if Linux users were
able to hack that.

I was able to install Mandrake 9.1 on an ancient
PowerMac 8500 using Internet sources, but the onboard
ethernet wouldn't work.
It was nice that the Newpowr G3 card was instantly
recognized, though.

A huge part of the illusion surrounding the cheap oil era is that
the only alternative to modernity is the stone age.
