I just picked up a Yamaha FW cdrw at the local goodwill that had a trashed
drive mechanism- someone set a too heavy coffee cup on the cup holder. I
connected the drive to my DA running 10.3.9 with the trashed drive in it and it
showed up as a FireWire 400 device. When I installed a known good LG DVD/CDRW
drive
into the case, it still only showed up as a FireWire 400 Device.

Put a blank CD in it, and iTunes saw it, recognized that the available drive
was not my default (default is an internal dual layer DVD R). iTunes confirmed
that I wanted to burn to that drive and burned away with no problems, but
system profiler only saw the drive as a FireWire 400 Device.

This is getting a bit off Al's original post but I think my problem is just a
defective internal ribbon cable. I will try a known working CDRW drive in the
enclosure with the questionable cable and see what happens when I put in a
blank CD-R.
