I've just been reading the recent "DVD Burners" thread with great interest.

My Quicksilver G4 733 has a simple, internal CD-ROM drive/burner. I'd like
to supplement that with an external DVD drive/burner that will work at least as
well as Apple's SuperDrive (DVD=B1RW/CD-RW) on single sided media. I am
thinking external because I could also use it with my new 12" iBook which has
the
Combo drive

What Brand/Models should I look at? I assume I would use Firewire.

I noticed the enthusiasm in the list for the Pioneer DVR-110D. But I'm
confused. I do not see this model at the Pioneer web site, and listers seem to
use
it in internal mount only.

The Pioneer DVR-110D has been problem free once installed internally in my B
& W and it boots into OS X and OS 9. However, you will need Patchburn to use
the Apple disc burning apps.

The drive is shorter than the original CD-ROM so I needed to discard the rear
metal shielding that attached original B & W CD-ROM in order to connect the
cables. I got the DVR110D from Shop4tech for $42 shipped.

My original idea was to put this in an external FireWire enclosure. I got a
"U-Storage" drive from Computer Geeks for $29 + Ship.

NO GO. The enclosure was only recognized as "FireWire 400 Device" from System
Profiler under 10.3.9. I haven't contacted Computer Geeks with this problem
but I suspect the enclosure is the problem. BTW I also connected
enclosure/drive combo to my Sawtooth with the same "no go" result.

My only advise is make sure the external enclosure/drive combo will work with
your configuration.

Good luck --glen (also in digest mode)
