Sorry for the top post, too much relevant to snip efficiently.
I just picked up a Yamaha FW cdrw at the local goodwill that had a
trashed drive mechanism- someone set a too heavy coffee cup on the cup
holder. I connected the drive to my DA running 10.3.9 with the trashed
drive in it and it showed up as a FireWire 400 device. When I installed
a known good LG DVD/CDRW drive into the case, it still only showed up
as a FireWire 400 Device.
Put a blank CD in it, and iTunes saw it, recognized that the available
drive was not my default (default is an internal dual layer DVD R).
iTunes confirmed that I wanted to burn to that drive and burned away
with no problems, but system profiler only saw the drive as a FireWire
400 Device.
FWIW,
Len

My original idea was to put this in an external FireWire enclosure.
I got a
"U-Storage" drive from Computer Geeks for $29 + Ship.
NO GO. The enclosure was only recognized as "FireWire 400 Device"
from
System
Profiler under 10.3.9.
BTW I also connected enclosure/drive combo to my Sawtooth with the
same "no go" result.

Why is recognition as "FireWire 400 Device" a problem? Is that a
show-stopper? I'm at 10.3.9 also. Do some enclosures get recognized
as something better?
Al,
System Profiler detected the enclose but not what was inside it. So
nothing would work. It did not matter if it was the Pioneer DVR-110D,
the DVD-ROM from the B & W or an old hard drive I had laying around.
Today I switched the internal ribbon cable that shipped with the
enclosure with a good ATA-133 hard drive cable. Now System Profiler
sees
whatever device I put in and lists the particulars like manufacture,
model, revision, ect. CDS's or HD's will now mount.
