I am now able to see the old hard disk but not the new one.

Where should the HD jumper be? Master? CS?

The old one is in CS but the new one can't be seen in either.

Can I install the iMac's HD in my Beige/OS9 in order to make a backup?

I'm wary of installing the OS over the old disk without a backup.

Do you get the basic bong?

When the firmware boot stalls, what icon does it leave on the screen?

Can you hear the HD spinning up at all?

Try zapping the PRAM.

Try reseating the HD cable.

Check to see if there are some diags on that install CD...
