Just to answer my own questions:
1) Yes, I could mount the iMac's HD in my Beige and backup the important
files. I didn't write anything to it, though. Horribly bad memories of
mixups of Apple HD drivers.
2) I initialized in the Beige a separate 60 GB HD that previously was
invisible to the iMac and its installer. Now I can see it in the iMac.
3) I put the new HD's jumper in CS, just as the old one was. But maybe
it's the same, or better, if I put it in Master. Where should it be
according to Apple's book?
I think I'll get a brand new 80 GB disk for the iMac. The old 60 GB disk I
wanted to use produces too much heat.
Regards.

Hello Dan and thanks for your reply.
I am now able to see the old hard disk but not the new one.
Where should the HD jumper be? Master? CS?
The old one is in CS but the new one can't be seen in either.
Can I install the iMac's HD in my Beige/OS9 in order to make a backup?
I'm wary of installing the OS over the old disk without a backup.
many, many thanks in advance,
