Just to answer my own questions:
1) Yes, I could mount the iMac's HD in my Beige and backup the
important files. I didn't write anything to it, though. Horribly bad
memories of mixups of Apple HD drivers.
Good plan. Remember that there are a lot of files on OS X-based HFS+
disks that have filenames larger than OS 9 can handle.
3) I put the new HD's jumper in CS, just as the old one was. But
maybe it's the same, or better, if I put it in Master. Where should
it be according to Apple's book?
Apple does not support the modern Cable Select (CS) set-up for IDE
drives. ALL ide drives must be jumpered appropriately as
Master-alone, Master-with-Slave and Slave.
