System upgrades involve many changes to system software, drivers, etc, some changes are made immediately, some won't take place until after a restart. It's a dangerous state to run a computer in.

That said, you can just ignore the jumping icon, move the notice out of the way and continue working, if that is such a big deal.

IMO, Apple made a mistake here. That dialog should have a death grip on your Mac.

Folx should use care pushing such aside, even temporarily. You hit the wrong thing and you can end up with a frozen Mac... Then you loose whatever you haven't saved yet, or worse.

It then froze or so I thought? Sort of just blue lit screen with X logo thingy not moving at all for at least 10 mins so I pulled plug. Restarted it and things seemed normal again...

Sometimes this happens.

Went thru this repeatedly with the Panther and Tiger test installs I did on my 300-MHz B&W (while I was adding and subtracting 3rd party hardwares). There *is* disk activity happening... It's rebuilding something, perhaps a kernel cache. A few times, it was fully hung. But usually if I left the machine alone for 30+ minutes, the boot finished.

You can also tell Software Update to save the downloaded updates, I forget where it puts them, perhaps the Library/Receipts folder.

Oh! Gotta go look for that. :)
