I had the same thing on a friends peecee. He was burning a cd and it locked up (BSOD). When he rebooted it wouldn't recognize the drive. He tried the OS install disk and everything. I came over and booted it with knoppix (a live linux CD) on the cd-rom and it mounted the burner. When I rebooted into windoze...walla! All was well! I've done that on several peecee's. For some reason once windoze locks it down it's almost impossible for it to unlock. Ah well!
