I just got an NEC ND-4550 and I'd strongly recommend one over the Pioneer if you're looking for a replacement - it's burns all the same formats at the same speed and I've had good luck with NEC drives in the past (+ it supports bit setting on +R, +RW, and +RW-DL with one of the Liggy & Dee firmwares flashed on it). Since 10.4.4, OS X will burn to anything without any 3rd party hacks (even writers Apple have never shipped), so there's no reason for us all to be stuck with dodgy Pioneer drives (I've replaced a couple in clients' machines over the last few months, so I don't think yours is an isolated case).

Upon closing the tray with a disc in it, the laser "head" moves back

I am at a loss.

The motor or motor controller is burned out. Electronic crap happens.

The drive, if only 2-3 months old, is still under a manufacturers
warrantee, unless you broke a seal removing the top cover...you may
have voided your warrantee.

I was very careful not to break any seals or do anything that would
void the warranty.

Though I'm assuming that I'm going to need to provide some sort of
original receipt or proof-of-purchase to prove the drive is still
under warranty, which unfortunately I may not have.

I just moved about a month and a half ago and a lot of old receipts
and invoices went straight to the dumpster rather than come with me.
I'm afraid the invoice for this drive may have fallen victim to the
same fate. I've been unable to locate it thusfar.
