Not necessarily, the manufacturer can often determine date of manufacture from the serial number, and since the manufacturer's warrantee runs from date of manufacture if the date of purchase annot be verified, because regardless of when it purchased, there's a minimum time after manufacture that the devise is warranted for.

Now this may require more to-and-froing to get the warrantee honored.
