On top of the other reported drawbacks and problems, someone once warned me that Google Groups "shares" your personal info with a lot of sales "partners," and you can expect a big increase in spam after joining. Is this true?

The closest I have seen is that when you go to the google groups page, the ads on the page somewhat reflect what groups you are subscribed to. But as with most Google things, the advertisers don't see who you are, they just hope to get the click throughs, which is how google makes most of of it's money.
