You can do this from AOL 5.0 if don't use the AOL browser. I used WaMCom Mozilla 1.3.1 available at; <http://wamcom.org/latest-131> from a 6100 and OS 8.6. However, if you can use the OS X version of AOL just go directly to the Google link and subscribe. I found it is now possible to post to the new LEM-Google Groups lists using the stock AOL for OS X mail client with no "plain text" problems.
