The code is stable enough for release,  yes.  It's certainly a big improvement 
on the old code.   It doesn't do anything different in terms of memory 
allocation,  and it's been running here for a week with no problems.  I'm 
hoping you'll check it into the 3.2 branch as well.

I was thinking that we might leave the null_int and null_float options in there 
as undocumented options that we will (probably) never use.   If you'd rather I 
take them out again then that would be a small change that we can make anytime, 
 so I don't think it needs to hold things up now.
