Although the departure of so many assistant coaches bothers me I feel the problems of this season are temporary.
Meyer has resurrected 3 programs in his career. He has lost coaches with every change. His OC, at Utah, Kyle Whittingham, went on to be successful there. I agree Meyer could be a little more open with practices and injury reports. But, that is a coach's option. He's still friendlier than Spurrier was to the general public. I don't think it's a matter of Gator Nation turning on Meyer. I'd say Gator Nation is very concerned about him. As many have already said, I'm just happy this season is past us, underperforming bowl game notwithstanding and on to better times. Wait until next year! He's the one who hired the coaches, he assigns them to their areas of coaching, he made the final decision on who got scholarship offers, etc.. I was listening to Pat Dooley on Jacksonville radio this morning and he said he had never seen Gator Nation turn on a coach faster than Urban Meyer, I'll admit I'm in that category. I'm mad at myself because Urban Meyer's record indicates he's a great coach, but for some reason he rubs me the wrong way. I've been telling my friends all season that you can't believe a single word that comes out of Gainesville anymore. Here are some things that have really bothered me. First is the injury situation. Matt Patchan was supposed to be a 2-week injury that turned into season ending. Jeff Demps is getting better but never was close to being the same. Just be honest with the injury report, you don't have to violate anyone's privacy, just say Matt Patchan has had a set back and will be out indefinitely. At the start of fall practice fans were barred from practice, the stated reason was to keep the scumbag agents away from the players, this is a total lie, you can do that without barring true fans and agents are not hanging out at practice, they are getting players at their apartments or in social situations not after practice. Urban Meyer has pretty much ditched his call in show, he sends assistants to do it. He's basically quit the booster club circuit. Urban Meyer makes over 4 million per year, the job requirements for the head coach at UF are more than recruiting and drawing up football plays, What I'm saying is, Urban Meyer is a great coach, but he's cut himself off from the fans and will look them in the eye and tell complete lies that everyone knows is a lie, but does it anyway.This works when you are competing for championships but when look like a unorganized high school team the goodwill is a lot less. If he's not 100% committed to turning things around he needs to go, we will know this fairly quickly. I think one thing that made it so unpleasant to watch this team - even when they won - was that underlying feeling of chaos and confusion. Most of the time, they seemed a little like the Keystone Kops, didn't they? Even when we were winning every game, there was a feeling of potential doom lurking. Remember how worried we were when Tebow was hurt? I think everyone knew that team - and, sadly, most of the coaching - was somewhat mediocre and, when Tim said he would carry the team on his shoulder, he really did have to do that quite often. If you look at how the teams of the last few years played with what auditors would call "a jaundiced eye", you realize that they would not have reached the heights they did without Tebow and his broad shoulders almost always there to carry the burden. When he had a bad game (ahem... the Citrus Bowl), there was nothing to fall back on. I realize it has been suggested that maybe Urban Meyer knew this, too, and that was at least part of the reason for his 'breakdown' or whatever it was at the end of last season. There may well be some truth to that. My dad and I were talking this weekend about how different even the most recent championship teams were as compared to SOS's championship teams (MNC and SEC). Many people categorized Danny Wuerffel as a mediocre quarterback, and maybe he was (Heisman trophy notwithstanding, right?) and suggested that UF won championships because of the talent of the team and outstanding coaching. They didn't attribute the championships to the QB. But those teams didn't look nearly as confused and chaotic (and Keystone Kops-like), and I have to think it's probably because of the differences in coaching. It was simply unpleasant to watch, and that unpleasantness was only accentuated by the talent of our players. I suppose that we have always had a feast or famine offense under Meyer, with the dive plays setting up a home run play by Demps or Harvin. With those players and Tebow, we outslugged a lot of teams and piled up a lot of points. We didn't seem to have those type of threats this year, and that exposed the herky-jerky nature of this offense. Adding the multiple quarterbacks - in my mind - didn't seem to help, but only made the offense more awkward and created more penalties. What was the year that we lost to Washington in the Garbage Bowl?
