Not necessarily. However, I have /etc/make.conf on my list of those I manually update. If etc-update wants to update it I don't let it and then do a copy and paste from new to my exisiting.

No, because I thought that would ruthlessly overwrite my entries with updated files. I've been doing: find /etc -iname '._cfg????_*' and updating manually instead. Is that where I have been going wrong?
