Yes, as your logged in user repeat the above commands or as root do: cp /home/loggedinusername/.Xauthority /root/ and rinse & repeat. :-) As to why the 'refused by server' messages: X doesn't let any other than the user logged (not even root) access the 'display', unless you explicitly tell it to do so. This is a security measure to stop "keyboard sniffers" and the like. Don't use xhost, use the above mentioned method with copying the .Xauthority 'mit magic cookie' instead.
