That's not quite correct; it's been possible to run SDDM directly as a Wayland session for quite a while. I have several machines that use `kwin_wayland`: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/SDDM#Kwin Since Plasma 6 I haven't noticed any issues, it used to be a _little_ weird for Plasma 5 if you (e.g.) logged out.
