Sounds like the server doesn't implement RandR version 1.2

What does xrandr -v say.  For me it is
  Server reports RandR version 1.2

If you don't have 1.2 you won't have the --output stuff.

Also --on doesn't exist even in 1.2.

I found man xrandr helpful.
