My parents are on a rural route like this.  One practical issue for
many companies is the economics to deal with the hassle of
accommodating such customers is not there. E.g. Internet based
companies may not find it worthwhile to accommodate such addresses in
their ordering systems.

While troubling, from an information architecture standpoint I can
understand the trade off.
