"Well, the cage needs replacing. We are thinking about getting the
standard 10 gallon tank. But we had tried this previously and it didn't
work out. We never found a water bottle that would work, they leaked
constantly. Also, where do you put food? We tried putting it in a
gerbil bowl, but she just buries it with the bedding."
Hi Katie
I only got my girls last August so cannot claim to be an expert but your
email prompted me to tell you about the set up I have for them. I bought
them an acquirium but it is made especially for rodents. The lid is a
special wire mesh lid which locks into the glass frame at the top and is
designed so that it cannot be easily chewed (and believe me they've tried).
But the best thing is that it has inbuilt glass "shelves" to create an upper
level with glass ramps for them to get up there. There are two shelves, one
either end, which are removable so you can take them out to wash or vary the
layout. I can then fill up the bottom with 3 to 4 inches of woodshavings,
but have the upper deck to put the food bowl and sandbath to keep it out of
the woodshavings.
With the water bottles, we tried the ones that hang over the side of the
acquarium, but it leaked, so we have now rigged up a water bottle set up
using two different waterbottles. We bought one system that came with a
suction cupped bracket which you fitted the water bottle to. Unfotunately
they couldnt grasp the mechanism on the water bottle. So we got a normal
ball bearing type water bottle, bent the wire round on it to create two
hooks and hung it on the bracket from the watersuction one. Works for us.
