A ten gallon tank, or larger, really is the best setup for gerbils. It's
almost, (I do mean almost) escape proof.
The only escape I've had is with a top which fitted into the lip of the tank.
I believe that my cat (ever fascinated by the gerbils) stood on top to get a
better view and collapsed the lid in on Bianca and her 2-3 day old babies.
None were hurt, but Dad Sebastian did manage to climb out on the lid and
escape, at least for long enough that Bianca wouldn't take him back. I'm
waiting 'til the pups are weaned to reintroduce them. For lids in this case,
I recommend those which sit on top of the aquarium and have separate clips to
hold them in place(available at PetSmart and most decent-sized pet stores).
If you have cats, get the higher-guage mesh, even if you think the cats
won't sit on top, they're more expensive, but you won't be sorry. :)
Good Luck,
Sarah
