It would probably be wise to support both spellings here. I'm sure
that people accustomed to USA spellings will write "meter" at some
point, so you may as well avoid trouble by recognizing both (or by
picking a different word that only has one spelling).
No information is conveyed by writing
field="Field"
in your specifications. Instead of saying
metre = "Metre"
you could write (for example)
metre = text
to indicate that this field is free form text.
