Another common way used to be to install change your swap partition over
to a normal ext3 partition, install your new OS to that, get your
current boot loader (I'm hoping it's grub here as you should have more
chance to rescue brokenness than LILO) to boot the new OS and then
continue from there.

Don't know if that helps you though.  Essentially you still end up with
lots of faffing.
