Dear Luka,
I would like to thank you for your time that you have spent on
preparing your SOCIS proposal. I can only wish that all potential
contributors to HelenOS would be so diligent as you and start with
such a detailed and elaborated proposal, even without being pushed
into it.
I'm glad that you and Jakub liked it. Next year it's going to be a
better one, for GSoC hopefully! :D
I was too busy last week to properly double-check whether Croatian
students are actually eligible to participate in ESA SOCIS. When I did
so today (before reading all the follow-up emails), it was also a
negative surprise for me that Croatia is not an ESA member state. I am
sorry about that and I am also sorry that I didn't think about it
before you spent your time on the proposal.
This is really a big limitation of SOCIS that also prevented two other
potential HelenOS participants to join this year. But it is not in our
power to alter this rule.
I completely agree. The Google Group is full of students asking the same
questions regarding eligibility.
Croatian Government was criticized in the mainstream media on a few
occasians for not taking any part in ESA's activities, but to
Government's defense, most other countries which recently joind EU
signed any contracts with ESA after 6 years of EU membership, so I'm
optimistically hoping for some 2019 agreement.
Anyway, if you are still interested in contributing to HelenOS, the
work you have already done won't get lost. I presume you already have
a topic for your Bachelor thesis, but if you plan to continue your
studies after getting the Bachelor degree, you can always try to
combine your contribution to HelenOS with some other school assignment.
Yep, I have a topic now, but next year I will be able to enroll Advanced
Operating Systems course, which has a mandatory practical part to it. I
will talk to the professor about incorporating HelenOS into it (or maybe
others if he's interested), but all in due time.
P.S.: I will remove your initial proposal from the mailing list
archive, just to be on the safe side. The archive is accessible only
to the subscribed members, but still, our mailing list is quite open.
Thanks!
L
