Matty, I wish I could attribute my Hum to a diesel engine 2 km away; unfortunately, I live in a rural location (a thick-walled stone cottage high on a hill - one of the worst places, I've read, for the Hum) - I have checked and there are no easily identifiable external sources for my Hum.
Auxset, I have friend whose father killed himself as a result of tinnitus and nearly killed his wife as well - I did not mean to suggest that having tinnitus comforted and cheered me (though I would add that my own experience of the Hum has been nowhere near as distressing as my experience of ten years with an undiagnosed brain tumour). What comforted and cheered me about Geoff's diagnosis was that it allowed me to accept that there was no point spending my life trying to identify the Hum since, rationally, it is likely to be internal and therefore entirely up to me to deal with. I know I can do that, I know there are methods of coping with disabilities in life. What I was distressed by was the thought of taking on the environment agencies, the government, the world, in trying to eliminate the Hum. Accepting LF tinnitus as a likely cause rids me of such a monumental burden and prevents me from wandering into the paranoid world of conspiracy theories. Of course, I cannot eliminate the possibility of an external cause and I'd be delighted if it could be found and destroyed! In the meantime, the most rational explanation I've found so far is that of LF tinnitus - it explains a human condition, showing the same characteristics throughout the planet, just like any other human condition. Best wishes with the BP reduction, Trev - it would be interesting to hear the results of your monitoring.
