Looking at the earlier filmed period showing 'direct at earth' activity - http://lasco-www.nrl.navy.mil/daily_mpg/090704_eit_195.mpg There's nearly 30 mins gap between consecutive clips of solar activity at a time when one would need to be looking for a CME to hit earth around the 7th July. At 04 14:48 you can see CMEs occur on the main spot at about 3 o'clock (large circular) & 7 o'clock(streamer) both lasting about 5 hours but another, pretty intense too, at 11 o'clock takes only ONE hour to flare and disperse- starting @ 04 20:36 Any of these are capable of causing problems, given our vulnerabilty to such events.
