true, I can do all the filtering I want with the amt8, but, then I have to
configure a patch for the amt8 for every song in addition to every other
peice of gear I use. then, in theory, I need the amt8 to respond to patch
change messages, so when I switch song, things are set up the way they are
supposed to be.
Even tho the amt8 has the ability to act as 8 different midi ports, I use
it as one big ol' midi port (the default setting in patch mode, and I use
output 0, all midi ports, in computer mode). I still limit my songs to 16
midi tracks. The benifits of doing it this way for me are:
1) dont have to worry about which instrument was plugged into which port
2) every instrument can talk to every other instrument. I can use my
virus to control my a3000.
3) the "routing" of what doesnt talk to what is easily handeled by
enableing/disabling that midi channel on each peice of gear. Then, to
automate switching songs, all I have to do is write a program change
message for each channel at the beginning of each song.
I know that #1 seems like im throwing away a very powerful feature of a
multi port midi setup (the ability to have 128 independent midi channels).
Before the amt8 (which is brand new, btw) I used a winman 4x4, which did
not have the ability to act as one single midi interface. it had to
be used as 64 seperate midi channels. I ended up loosing songs, cause,
not only did I have to remember what gear I used, and what patch on each
peice of gear, but also, what port it was plugged into. It got to be too
confusing.
so, I used the 4x4 as a 1x1 and just made a big midi in->through->in
chain. this of course has its onwn limitations, but I never had to worry
about what went where.
moving to the amt8 has been wonderful. easy as pie, and it works exactly
the way I was hoping it would. the only thing that didnt work right, was,
in computer mode, the rm1x would respond to every channel. (in patch mode,
the rm1x IS my sequencer. When its playing it goes through the "to tg:/to
midi out:" filter in the setup menu. unfortunatly, it doesnt do this when
acting as a sound module.
I hope even some of this made sence. this whole thing has been so
confusing. My studio, try as I might, never seems to settle down, but,
that is what Im working towards. I think with the amt8, and this latest
info on the rm1x null patches, I might have finally done it.
