translate tables were needed for terminals. 2741 & 1052 weren't actually "ebcdic" ... their code was tilt/rotate bits for the "golf" ball ... translate tables were needed to translate between ebcdic and tilt/rotate codes. different typeballs could require different tilt/rotate codes ... for instance apl typeball ... i've uploaded couple images of 2741 typeball http://www.garlic.com/~lynn/aplball.jpg http://www.garlic.com/~lynn/aplball2.jpg i previously mentioned the clone controller project getting temporarily messed up because of ibm controller linescanner convention of leading bit into low-order position resulting in bit-reversed bytes. ...
