The recovery partition you got in HP is its specific drive, where your
vista is backup up. Did you get the VISTA bootable install CD? I think
you didnt. Vista is not distributed like this with HP. Its setup comes
preinstalled, and when you start computer for the first time, it
installs it. It let you make a backup CD's series, thats what you must
be having. If this is the case, you should not reinstall vista, just
make some room for Ubuntu, use Vista to resize the disk partition (Not
HP backup partition, but C: ) if it allows. 
And bro, I have used Vista on friends PC, liked its Interface and minute
work in UI/Presentation, but I don;t own it. I just know something, for
more, pl;ease gooooooogle more and more till you are satisfied. Then
take the action.
