Upgrading takes a few hours if you have a good/cheap internet connection. I understand that you can use the alternate-ubuntu-cd to upgrade without needing to download everything while upgrading. I haven't tried this myself though. In my experience, upgrades do not normally break. And if they do, Ubuntu fora provide plenty of support. In fact, I have had a situation when Feisty did not install, but I was able to upgrade from the previous version.
