Mine was originally the Graphite iMac DV SE.

Now the shell is blue, because that is the color the 350's shell was that
I took the power supply from (although now, it is under my desk, so the
color really doesn't matter to me). I guess I could have put my Graphite
shell onto it, but I really didn't care at that point.

The hard drive is not very loud. When it used to be on my desk (back when
the original Graphite CRT was working), you could hear the drive spin up,
and if you listened you could just barely hear the drive itself (but I
have sensitive hearing, and I'm also very attuned to listening for hard
drives, so I might have noticed something that others wouldn't). Now that
it is under my desk, I can't hear the drive at all.

When I bought the drive, I specifically bought a Quantum drive marketed
as being very quiet.

I didn't run the original 13 GB drive for very long before replacing it,
so I don't really recall how loud it was... but I do recall that it was
noticeable (I don't remember what machine I moved that drive into, so I
can't go check how noisy it is these days... although more than likely,
it moved into a PC so chances are you can't hear it over a PC's fans
anyway).

If you are thinking of upgrading to a different drive, and you want one
that is very quiet, you may want to look at Seagate drives. I can't swear
by the info, but my brother tells me they are the only drives he will
purchase, because all other drives put out a whine that bothers him. He
says the Seagate drives are the only ones he can't hear from outside the
computer case (he also has sensitive hearing, its a family trait). I'm
not as bothered by hard drive squeal as my brother is, so I've never
really paid enough attention to know if one manufacturer is quieter then
another. But if I was looking for a quiet drive today, I'd take my
brother's word for it and try out a Seagate.
