I've not used the newer all button mouse. But the original iMac puck style mouse (used up until the all button optical mouse was released), I've had several die on me (I think I'm up to about 10 now). >Hey, this is a good time to ask a question about iMac external >monitors. The worst thing about the iMac isn't the slow speed, but >poor text reading and resolution. My wife needs 120 character lines >for her work without scrolling and it's hideous. I would love to put >an external monitor on my 600 MHz graphite. > >Apparently the later ones, I "think" this one included (I looked behind >the panel) don't have a VGA plug (why not!?). I was under the impression all CRT iMacs with firewire have VGA out. I was going to tell you it is under a plastic oval shaped grill on the back of the iMac... but you say you looked under that panel already. So I guess they did away with the VGA on some models... that kind of sucks. Odd that they would pull it off for later CRT models, and then put it back for the flat panel models (in the form of a DVI port instead). Are you sure you looked under the correct panel? It is NOT the flip down panel that you use to access RAM and Airport. It is an oval plastic vented panel under the CRT Yoke buldge on the back of the iMac. You need a screw driver or the likes to pry it off. My brother in law has the Snow version of that iMac and I thought his had the VGA out... in fact, I recently replaced his hard drive and had the bottom of his iMac off, and I am 99.44% sure I saw the VGA port (I remember having to work the grounding cage around the port). I'd double check to be sure you looked under the correct panel. Keep in mind, even if you do find it... the iMac is designed to do mirror mode video only thru that port. That means you can't set an external screen to any higher resolution then the CRT supports... not without risking damage to the CRT. I was able to get mine to go to 1280x1024 at 60 Hz which is the highest my LCD supports. But this is NOT supported by the iMac, I had to use a 3rd party app to hack OS X to get the resolution. I was willing to do it because my CRT was already dead, so I didn't mind forcing it into a mode that was bound to damage the CRT (what was I going to do, break it more?!?) -chris <http://www.mythtech.net> -- The iMac List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
