I had a lot of problems getting X11 apps to even launch when I was
using OS X 10.2.8 -- Apple developed X11 for Jaguar, but then
deprecated it. X11 rarely worked and most apps bombed out. I have
only had real success with X11 since buying a new iMac running 10.4.
The original poster never indicated what version of OS X they were
running, or what version of X11 they had installed.
Assuming you are running 10.4, then the simplest way to run The GIMP
is this:
GIMP.APP
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/unix_open_source/gimpapp.html
GIMP.APP is a compiled binary that delivers the fastest, most mac-
like way to install and run The GIMP.
When downloading and running GIMP.APP, I would never know it's an X11
application if not for the ugly interface and bouncing X11 in my dock.

My son is trying to load Gimp but it says it needs Apple X11. We've

As others have mentioned, /Applications/Utilities/X11.app
When I run the GIMP (which I installed with Fink), I start X11 by
double-clicking it, then run it from the xterm that opens by typing
'gimp' and pressing return. (You can also add items to the
'Applications' menu in X11 so that you don't have to type.
If you have a different Mac Port (and it sounds like you do), try
running X11 and then starting the GIMP.
Unless you and your son are exceptionally geeky, this gimp/x11 thing
ain't for you. You'll spend FAR more time and effort on IT than on
the actual end product you were trying to accomplish in the first
place (ex. editing a photo).
GIMP is an excellent piece of software. It has a lot of the
functionality of Photoshop, without the added (monetary) cost.
Many people prefer the interface of the GIMP to Photoshop (although
this is probably down to what you know). Although there is a
learning curve, the interface is generally pretty well thought out
(provided that you don't expect it to be just like your usual Mac
software). Photoshop also has a learning curve...
I disagree strongly that you must be exceptionally geeky to try
X11. Whilst it could be argued that I am a little geeky, I do not
think that the installation of these things is difficult. I concede
that installation is more complex than the usual drag and drop
thing of installing a Mac app, it's certainly no more difficult
than an installation on Windows, and 90% of the computing public
manage just fine with that.
Get Photoshop Elements or Graphic Converter and don't waste your time
I haven't tried Elements, but GraphicConverter is nothing compared
to the GIMP. It's role is to convert image formats along with a
little bit of basic colorisation and cropping. The tools that GIMP
offers are a closer match to something like Photoshop (although in
many cases they are not as extensive as the ones that Adobe has ---
I guess you'd expect that since Adobe's engineers are paid and the
GIMP's are not).
Merry Christmas,
Tim
