Don't hold the control, just hold the 'c' key. Other than that, you are on the right track. Keep in mind, if it used to work, and now you are getting a flashing ? that could mean the drive has died. Since you don't care about the data on the drive, try to reformat it. If the drive is dead dead, you won't be able to format it (it won't even show in the Disk Util). But even if it does show, that doesn't mean it is a 'good' drive. It could still be a dying drive and have bad sectors. If you are going to reformat it, you might want to use one of the more complete reformat options, like zero all data. That will force Disk Util to attempt to write a zero to every sector on the drive when it formats. That will cause it to turn up any bad sectors in the drive. If it formats fine when doing that, then the drive may still be fine, and it could have just been corrupt system files that kept it from booting. Do your install, and just be sure to keep an eye on the drive for a while.
