You are in the right place. If you don't see the hard drive, then as far as the iMac is concerned there is no hard drive. Chances are that means it is dead. When you open it to replace the drive, you can make sure all the cables are seated firmly and try again (just in case one popped loose). You should then be left back with the flashing question mark.
