i just got an external firewire HD. i was hoping it would last
years. does this mean I got the wrong connector? i dont care much
about speed - will there be any kind of firewire on the new macs?

The new iMac does not have firewire 800, nor does the MacBook.
The PPC iMac doesn't have firewire 800 either, so it is just a loss on
the MacBook vs the PowerBook 15" (which is what it essentially
replaces).
